Soy Profesora Ayudante Doctora.

Researcher and lecturer at the University of Málaga. My research focuses on the cognitive and neural bases of language and on recovery from aphasia after stroke.

More information

I am an Assistant Professor. I am particularly interested in the cognitive and neural mechanisms of speech production, the analysis of spontaneous discourse, the characterisation of aphasic profiles, and brain plasticity and recovery after acquired brain injury.

I obtained my PhD in Biomedicine and Translational Research from the University of Málaga in 2019 (Cum Laude and Extraordinary Doctorate Award). My predoctoral and postdoctoral work has been funded through competitive contracts (FPU, PAIDI, Margarita Salas), and I have carried out 21 months of research stays at leading national and international centres. I specialise in multimodal neuroimaging, neuropsychological assessment of language and the analysis of connected speech in people with aphasia.

I have published 24 articles in international journals such as Neurology, Brain Structure and Function, Brain and Language, Scientific Reports, Cortex and Aphasiology, as well as 5 book chapters. I study core phenomena of aphasia such as conduite d'approche, echolalia, semantic perseverations and the heterogeneous progression of aphasic profiles. My work on expertise in backward speech received the 2023 Ig Nobel Prize in Communication.

I have taken part in a range of national, regional and university research projects. I sit on the research committee of the international INCLUDE network, which promotes linguistic diversity in brain health research. I am Guest Editor of a special issue of Brain and Language and review for journals such as Cortex, Brain Structure and Function, Aphasiology and European Journal of Neurology.

Since 2014 I have combined research with clinical practice at the Cognitive Neuroscience and Aphasia Unit and with teaching on the Psychology and Speech Therapy degrees at the University of Málaga.
